So…we are flying across two seasons, three climate zones and trying to pack for not only a multi-day, multi-climate 50 mile hike but also a cultural tour and two-three day motorcycle trip around Peru over 2 weeks. What a packing headache!!!
So how to do it:
1. Get everything you think you need, and lay it out. Solicit help from friends and family on what you should take and most importantly, leave behind.
2. Take what is left and try to pack it for the trip. If you are lucky It will fit. You should however leave room for souvenirs. Chances are however, It will not fit at all and you will still need to cull. You should also consider compression bags as well as self compressing vacuum bags Keep in mind the possibility of failure for the latter.
3. So, what do you REALLY need? Do you need 5 pairs of pants, 4 shirts, 5 under shirts or can you get away with 1/3 of all that. Decide on what you MUST have and set it aside. For me, it’s my Nikon d300s. I will leave my sleeping bag home to bring that. 🙂
4. Once the second cull is complete, pack smart, put socks in your shoes, compress your clothes, roll your jacket. Do what you must to take advantage of what space is available.
5. Wait a day, sleep on it…then cull again. Trust me, you do not need to look classy when traveling. If you are reading this blog, you can get away with a couple shirts and pants for a long trip. Looking clean and fancy just draws attention, best look the part of a weary traveler anyways.
So there you have it how to pack for a multi-adventure trip. Pack, cull, repack, cull, and finally cull again hoping not to need any of the things you just pulled.
