HELLO!!! If you have been following us you would have noticed two things. The first thing is that this blog hasn’t seen much action for a while. The second is that a few things on the site kind of went defunct. I will take personal responsibility for both of those things and beg your forgiveness. 🙂
So I bet you are wondering what happened. One minute we are posting about travel, and the next minute the yurt goes up for sale and we vanish. What happened quite simply is we went on a serious adventure….not one on the other side of the globe, but one right locally. We obtained a 50 acre woodlot, registered it as a tree farm, certified it as a wildlife habitat, and created a wildlife refuge. On top of that we built an 900sqft micro-house in the middle of the forest, completely off-grid like the yurt, but designed to be able to be left at whiff of an overseas adventure. When we say built a house….WE actually built it ourselves with no outside help. It takes a couple of years to actually do it well, and truth be told we are not done….then again, a house is never done 🙂
The house was designed with a metal clad steep roof profile to be able to shed snow, water pipes limited so draining would be easy, and recessed windows to allow security boarding to be able to be installed. Unlike the Yurt, the house allows us to store our stuff securely and leave much longer.
Do we miss the yurt? At times we do. We miss hearing the weather, the birds, the uniqueness of living in a round structure. It was fun. We did not pick the location to have it very well however, it was out in the open when caused it to break down quickly, and we suffered dearly in the summer due to the heat. Our house now is well insulated which keeps us warm on 1/4 the amount of fuel wood, and much cooler in the summer.
Looking to the future we have some exciting thing in store, In two weeks we will be heading to Peru to hike the Inca Trail and in June will be cruising the inside passage in western Canada followed by a train ride through Alaska.
So there you have it, stay free and tuned.
